The Story of a Woman’s Journey to Redemption —
Ngunt lived in a rough neighborhood, surrounded by dangerous people. And she was a fortune-teller.
Many people paid Ngunt to tell their fortunes, and to do this, she submitted herself to the controlling power of evil spirits. She confesses that she had willingly given herself to the spirits and even prayed to them. These evil spirits then gave her knowledge about people’s lives that had occurred in private, which gave her credibility because she could tell them secrets about themselves. Ngunt could even tell them what they had eaten and where they had been during the day, even though nobody had been with them.
But God had other plans for this woman and a journey to redemption began.
The Journey
Her journey began when Ngunt’s daughter moved away from home and was introduced to Christianity. She became a believer in Jesus Christ and later moved back to her hometown, but there was no church in the neighborhood. There was no Christian testimony, no Christian groups. Ngunt moved in with her. She tried to explain the Bible to her mother, but there was resistance and rejection, along with blank stares.
The Journey Continues…Enter Pastor Goh
Pastor Goh moved to this area and met Ngunt’s daughter. She invited him to start a Bible study in her house. Now remember, there was no church, there were no other known Christians in this area, but Pastor Goh began to conduct a Bible study every night, seven days a week. So every single night, anyone who wanted to learn about the Bible could come to this house.
For over two months, he welcomed anyone willing to gather for the Bible study.
Because the study was held in the home, Ngunt was always present, but she never really participated. She just sat in the corner with a dazed, almost confused, look upon her face. When she was telling me her testimony she shared that she never understood anything at the Bible study. Nothing connected in her mind. It was as if there was a veil over her face, a further demonstration that the controlling spirits hindered her.
Because White Fields financially supported Pastor Goh, he was able to minister full-time, leading the Bible study every night of the week. He gave them a survey of the Old Testament—of God’s redemptive plan—and He laid a foundation, building principle upon principle, for the coming death of Jesus Christ. White Fields also supported Pastor Goh spiritually through prayer. He requested that we pray for open hearts to understand the truth—especially for Ngunt.
Pastor Goh prayed as well. He would spend two hours every afternoon, praying for Ngunt’s salvation. He trusted that God would somehow open her mind to understand the Scriptures.
This Bible study continued for months. Pastor Goh continued to pray for Ngunt—that God would command the spirits to leave her. At the same time the saints were interceding on her behalf, she was praying up to four hours every morning, asking the spirits to continue giving her information. There was a definite battle going on. She was praying for the spirits to give her more knowledge so she could tell fortunes and make money all the while Pastor Goh and White Fields’ partners were praying for her release and redemption.
Then came an evening at the Bible study when Ngunt testified that for the first time everything had become clear. As tears welled up in her eyes she told me that it was that night for the first time she could hear and understand everything Pastor Goh was saying. It all became evident to her. Her mind was clear.
That evening, she received Christ Jesus and became a new convert.
Redeemed and Steadfast
The next day, the people who had been paying her for their fortunes threatened her, saying she had better be careful because the spirits would come and hurt her and her family. They told her she should be very afraid and that she should not turn away from the spirits and become a Christian. But she said, “No, I am not going back. I am not going to tell your fortunes anymore; I’m giving all that up. I am not doing it. I am a believer in Jesus Christ.”
As she related to me her redemptive story she placed a hand on the young man sitting by her side. She said, “Now many years have passed and no harm ever came to my family.” Other members of her family have become believers. Her grandson, Min, is studying at the Bible Institute so that he can become a pastor.
Ngunt testifies still to this day: “My God is bigger than the spirits.”
By the grace of God and His work through White Fields, there is now a well-established body of believers brightly shining the light of the gospel in the community.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” (John 10:27-30 ESV)
