Solving poverty in impoverished communities is no easy task. Poverty is present everywhere we minister. Giving people welfare relief may have an air of compassion but we have recognized that it could hurt them in the long run. How does White Fields address this portion of our ministry to become a solution instead of compounding the problem?

Motherhood: A Strenuous Occupation
Serving little ones as a mother is never an easy task in life. Mothers fulfill the incredibly powerful role of nourishing and protecting the infant human life in their bodies until delivering the child at birth. The job is not finished at birth, intense as that process may be. In continuation of that role, mothers raise the children of the next generation. Birth brought the child into a hostile world. A newborn baby is not capable of surviving without a caregiver; God blessed them with a mother. Mothers, including adoptive moms, spend countless sacrificial hours guiding, encouraging and nourishing children into adulthood.

When the people trapped in the bondage to evil spirit worship are set free, there is great rejoicing. The outward demonstration of what God has done in the heart of the believer requires courage in the face of the threats from the demonic realm. Justine, a witchdoctor—one who served the demons by calling upon them to issue curses or tell fortunes—has come to faith.
She made a complete surrender when she gave her life to Christ. The church gathered to pray as she brought the fetishes that she had been using to engage the spirit world for her hexes and fortune telling. These items were valuable to her since people paid her great sums of money to put curses on others and to tell them their fortunes.
Many villagers gathered—watching—waiting—waiting—waiting to see if harm would come; would the spirits she has served now strike her, would she become ill or even… death! God protected her! No harm occurred!
Now many people are coming to the church in Rutete searching for the same knowledge in the gospel of Jesus Christ that freed this witchdoctor from her imprisonment.
Love Travels Far
As we approached the simple structure, a woman came out with her arms opened wide to greet us with a hug. She received our simple gifts of maize, beans, soap, and a loaf of bread. “I have not tasted bread since the last time your mission team visited my home.” Our team in Uganda had first begun to minister to these people living in the region of Kikirara in May of 2017. There was a famine caused by severe drought.
Our churches in Rukungiri traveled into the area and went house to house and discovered the deaths from starvation. No one else was providing any assistance, and the people were hopeless. White Fields assisted our churches to bring maize, beans, salt and other simple supplies that allowed these people to survive. Now I had the opportunity to visit the community and travel with Pastor Bryan and Onesimus.
What a surprising realization that a loaf of bread was beyond this women’s affordable cost of living. She was impoverished, and any income would be used to buy the least expensive form of food–maize. Step by Step
Our ministries around the world are making progress every day. The national pastors we support apply hard work, faithful obedience, and diligent perseverance in their ministries. When combined with the prayers of our partners, then by the grace of God, people come to faith in Jesus Christ. Each step in the process builds upon the last step until total transformation takes place. Villages are turned upside down and people walk in a newness of life.
Real Hope Flickers
The smile of a destitute woman, unable to feed her small children, captures the emotion of hope breaking through the despair when servants of the Lord arrive with food.
Total desperation is rarely felt in our daily lives here in North America. Even when one region of our community is hit with a fire or terrible storm, somewhere else nearby has supplies and is readily available to provide relief. Not so in Africa. Especially not among the poorest of the poor and outcast people of the rural villages.
